~ That BLT Again ~
~ (Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Sandwich, You Know) ~
~ Open Face... Or Sliced? ~
Lessee, what day is this? Oh yeah Tuesday... all day... So what yesterday?
Not much besides a little cooking... Started with that BLT Sandwich, but not much cooking to that
Sliced up a nice Tomato, toasted up a couple slices of whole wheat bread, nuked up some bacon
Then spread on some Spin Blend (better than Miracle Whip)(tastier than Mayo)
Then piled it all on the sandwich, took time for a couple pictures and then attacked it with Gusto!
Like Paula Deen says "It's sooooooo good"

And then out to pick the last 4 Rutgers tomatoes and pull up the plant and into the dumpster
Pulled the big pot back to the veranda for the winter, Rutgers season complete
Then back inside to start on the salsa
Kind of a long drawn out process... Chunked up and ground up all the Poblano peppers
Just a bit spicy, they made me cough and tear up as I seeded them
Put that into the pot and then did the same with a big sweet onion, and a couple garlic cloves
Next, processed all the Rutgers tomatoes and into the pot... Now simmer away an hour or two
Back in later to taste.. Yeah that's plenty spicy.. Well all those Poblanos...
Added salt, black pepper and sugar.. Yeah a teaspoon or so of sugar brings out the flavor...
Then some cumin, basil and oregano and to cut down on the heat some, a can of diced tomatoes, drained
Let that all simmer some more, then a taste.. Yeah! Just right, really tasty and not too much heat
So then for a taste test, thawed out a frozen burrito, some cheese and lots of salsa on top and Oh Yeah!
This time a really winner Salsa.. and NO Jalapenos, only home grown Poblanos
And about a quart of that stuff left to freeze for later...OLE!

~ Some Salsa in the Making ~
~ Salsa Preparada! Picante! ~
~ Tomatoes ~ Poblano Peppers ~ Onion ~ Garlic ~ And Spices ~
The Rutgers Tomatoes are officially retired, picked the last 4 today
I will toss those green ones in with the riper ones for the salsa, taste like tomatillos maybe
I'll chop this stuff up, toss into the Food Processor, then into the pot with a bit of Olive oil
Simmer a bit, then add some salt, pepper, cumin and basil, maybe some oregano...
And Ole!... Salsa Picante con las Tomates y los Poblanos!
And add a Jalapeno or two if it isn't picante enough...
~ Now... What for the Rest of this Long Dull Monday? ~

~ Some More Rutgers Tomatoes ~
~ Only Four Left on the Vine Now ~
~ Take Your Pick ~ Better Boys or Rutgers ~ Rutgers Front Row ~
Most all the Rutgers getting some color now... 4 Green ones still on the vine
So I picked these 8, now on the table to ripen a bit more... Then make some Salsa with the Poblano peppers
This makes a total of 19 so far I think, and with the 4 left, 23 for the Season...
I picked 24 Better Boys so far... Will get a few more though they are taking a rest now it looks like
Maybe here you can see why Better Boys tomatoes are my favorite, not to mention the great taste
Of course the Rutgers were in the pot and the Better Boys in the side bed
But in 2007 Left here are the Betters Boys in that pot and in 2010 the Rutgers in that pot this year
I can't remember exactly but I think I got 140 Better Boys from that pot in 2007 from three plants
And I got 782 Cherry tomatoes in 2008 from one plant in that pot, here are some of those
Also, I got a nice crop of Better Boys from one plant in the pot in 2009.. didn't keep count
Anyway, it's all for fun, I am not a serious gardener nowadays

~ Raisin Oatmeal Cookies ~
~ Pretty Good this Time ~
~ Moist and Chewey and Full of Raisins ~
Not much going on Saturday, nice day and warm again
Headed up to the Price Chopper to get some Cookie stuff, needed Raisins and Flour, I had some rolled Oats
Then I saw bacon on sale, picked up a pound of that for some more BLTs later
Back to the ranch to work a couple DUD scratch tickets, then started on the cookies
Went smoothly, this time with my stand mixer, I think the last batch was by hand and that's tedious
So I mixed and rolled and into the oven for 11 minutes... Set the timer
But that wasn't time enough, reset the timer for 3 minutes more
But... I didn't reset the oven and it cooled off and I was wondering why they didn't get done
So I reset again and I finally got the first batch baked
So in with the second batch, reset the timer but did NOT reset the oven again.. What is this.. Old Age?
So I am waiting and waiting and the beep went off, checked the cookies and NO GO! DARN!
SO.. again I reset the timer and oven temp and away we go and I got them baked...
Later cooled and into the bowl, then had a couple with my manhattan at TV time... Yeah.. GOOD!
And then later, attacked the bacon, I like to do the whole package in the oven in my big Pyrex dish
That takes several sessions, turning over several times, pouring off the drippings for seasoning
Then drained on paper towels, into a baggy and into the freezer, the drippings saved in the fridge
Maybe a BLT sometime today now... And that was it for a slow Saturday

~ Shrimp Scampi ~
~ One More Experiment ~ And Success ~
~ My Take on Shrimp Scampi ~
Dish of the day... Been wanting to try Shrimp Scampi
Getting some milage out of that sack of frozen shrimp, two shrimp cocktails and that Gumbo so far
So I checked online for a few recipes and decided to take off on my own
I used the basics, butter, onion and garlic... added celery, left out the wine
Sauteed the veggies, added the Shrimp to heat, served on top of rice with soy sauce
And I have to say it was DARN GOOD! Now to use up the rest of that shrimp some way
So, earlier off to the dentist at 8 a.m. With some trepidation
And... after a description and explanation of my problem, he poked around, bite this, bite that
And it did hurt when I bit down, then a couple X-rays and a long wait
But he came back... Well, don't really see any problem, no decay, nothing visible
But, he speculated, I may have two cracked teeth, might not get any worse right away...
And he said I could go ahead and do a root canal and crown on each of them
Well, you may know that is quite expensive and really no fun at all, and I don't know how much my plan will pay
So my decision is to wait and watch, check later when I have my checkup next month
And really happy to hear there is no decay as I had suspected
On to the fun part of the day... Looking out my window... I see this thing... What's that?
So I went out to see this 6 inch long Walking Stick insect hanging on the screen
So of course I had to take a photo... And on chat I asked Sigi if he had seen one
Nope... Picture? he says... So I gave him a link on the web, then sent a link to this pic I uploaded
So, I was reading all about them, says they are harmless, they don't stink, eat lettuce, make a good pet
So I went out and put it in a plastic bowl with a lid, I don't need any bug for a pet but maybe get some more pics
But they say do not release them again as they can cause plant damage in large numbers
OK, on with the day, watered the plants good again, not much use for the cucumbers and Rutgers tomatoes
I haven't had to water the side bed, the roots must be deep there and we had a lot of soil moisture
So then just finished out the day, cooking my scampi and watching the Boob Toob
I need to make some more Cookies... Raisin Oatmeal this time?
~ Now... It's Saturday ~ When is Pay Day Anyway? ~

~ More Tomatoes ~ Nice Ones! ~
~ Most of the Big Ones are Picked Now ~
~ The Best of the Better Boys Tomatoes ~
The morning routine and then a run for the Snail Mail and up to the Chopper for milk and Scratchers
Back to work my duds and then what? Boredom setting in again...
Well I picked a couple of ripe Better Boys Tomatoes yesterday... Out again to check...
Well, a couple with nice color and two more nice ones hiding way in the back, picked five
And looks like we are about caught up with the harvest so far, a few smaller ones on there
But they will keep producing some until frost
I sliced a nice one for dinner last night and another for breakfast today
Such a short season for such good eats... But worth it
Looks like the Rutgers are about to give up and go away, maybe 10 left on a shaggy plant
A couple almost ripe, when they get more color I am going to pick them all
Then pick all the good sized Poblano peppers and make salsa from the tomatoes and peppers
That should make a tasty mild salsa, if not hot enough I can add a jalapeno or two
Later a salad with that last cucumber and a tomato... Then Smoked Chicken and tater salad
And that was about it for the day...
Oh Yeah, Dentist today... Not exactly looking forward to that

~ Steak and Noodles ~
~ Did Beef and Noodles Last Time ~
~ Grilled Sirloin Steak ~ Sauteed Celery, Onion, Red Sweet Pepper ~
~ Ready in the Pot ~ Ready on the Plate ~
Well I guess Steak and Noodles is also Beef and Noodles... But I used Chuck Roast last time...
Had that Sirloin Steak in the freezer, needed to do something creative with it
The recipe is about the same, Beef, Noodles, Celery, Onions, Sweet Pepper, Gravy... So Easy
I grilled the steak in my big cast iron skillet, then into the oven to finish
Meanwhile sauteed diced Celery, Onion and a Red Sweet Pepper I had on hand in Olive Oil
Then let the steak cool, cut into nice big cubes, Add gravy, then egg noodles to the diced veggies
Stir in the Beef to meld nicely, then VOILA.. Steak and Noodles Supreme!
I had a Nice Egg and Tomato Sandwich on Toast for breakfast
Then I checked the tomatoes again, found this real nice big red ripe one hiding in the back
Just a few more getting some color now, pick them in next couple days
On the Scratcher scene, won a $3 Bingo and a $10 Crossword
That's just a $4 profit after trading for another loser Bingo
I saw Neighbor Mike out on his deck, gave him that Number 19 Super tomato... He is leaving first of next week
Earlier I gave a nice tomato to the guy in the next Apartment
After a manhattan and afternoon TV News, Dished up the Steak and Noodles for a Feast
Sliced up one of those tomatoes with a little salt and basil... Couple slices of Bakery Italian bread
Yeah, that is some good stuff... How Sweet it Is!
Oh yeah, Got an IM from Sigi in Germany this morning... Since when don't you use punctuation?
I guess he means no periods at the end of these lines... Well I think it looks better to leave them off
I do that on a lot of my web pages too... But I do use a lot of ellipses... as you may have noticed
Then he corrected THAT spelling.. says it's ellipsis... (but I mean plural... ellipses) So there too!
Ellipsis (plural ellipses); is a mark or series of marks... that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word in the original text
( An ellipsis can also be used to indicate a pause in speech, an unfinished thought, or, at the end of a sentence)

~ More Better Boys Tomatoes ~
~ And One More Cucumber ~

~ The Basil I Dried Monday ~ The Tomatoes I picked Tuesday ~ (4 in Front) ~
Cucumber Number 8, and it's a nice one... Better Boys Tomatoes Number 15-16-17-18...
I picked Number 14 and it was a nice BIG one, but had a BIG Caterpillar inside eating it up
Have a few more nice ones on those vines back there coloring up some
And several Rutgers but ripening very slowly... I think I will just make salsa out of them with the Poblano peppers
And the AT&T U-Verse Service man showed up about 9 a.m. Checked out a few things here and there
Didn't really find any problem so I am stuck for now with less internet speed then they promised
Well, I am paying for 18 mbps and it's running a little under 16 mbps So I guess that isn't too bad
And I mentioned I would need another Ethernet cable to hook up my new computer so he gave me one
Then we were taking about HD TV... So I says I will show you some REAL HD and put on my Blu-ray DVD of the Liberty Memorial
So up comes the video and he says WOW! as most do when they see that DVD... Justifies the expense of Blu-ray to me
As I have said, it is in better resolution than most broadcast HD on the air now
So then what? Not much going on... Just enjoying the cool weather
Outside to talk with Mike (Upstairs Neighbor)... He is all eager to head out for Texas and his lady friend
All kinds of plans for fun and travel... Get out of the rut he is in here for the present
Gave him a couple smoked chicken quarters to celebrate...
And... I just did a re-run on a smoked pork sandwich and tater salad... Nice day after all

~ More Sweet Basil to Dry and Store ~
~ And My Salvaged Weed ~

~ A Volunteer Marigold ~
Well now, I was out front pulling weeds out of the pebbles that cover my yard when I pulled this one out
Oh now, that is a Marigold, not a weed and it had a bud on it... So I stuck it in a pot... watered it
And found a smaller one a short distance away and added that... Now after a few days they are looking good
I guess they enjoy the attention and the nice potting soil in the pot
And I snipped off the last branch of that Sweet Basil plant, this is the third harvest
I just don't use fresh basil enough to keep the plant picked off so I snip off the whole branch and dry it for later
I use a lot of dried basil and now have enough to last til next year I believe
It is in a slow oven now and wafting the aroma throughout the house
A few hours later the Basil was dry and I crumpled it up and stored it
I have another picking of Jalapenos coming on and quite a few small Poblanos
I was thinking of grinding up all those small Poblanos and see what kind of salsa they would make
Probably milder than salsa with Jalapenos... Just might try that
So, what's for dinner? Was thinking of using that Sirloin steak in the freezer for tips and noodles, that's good
I used to order that years ago at a downtown restaurant in Kansas City, where some of the IBM Guys met for lunch
The 'Green' something, I forget now... They had some really good food
But no, I had some ham to use up and some fresh potato salad... So, I baked a sweet potato
And had Ham Steak, Sweet Potato and Potato Salad, yeah, that's OK
So what today? I was thinking my Internet was slow, checked online and the speed was down a bit
Called AT&T and they ran a test, said they would send a Technician out this morning
Seems Yahoo has been slow lately too, I don't think it is all AT&T U-Verse BUT.. we shall see...

~ Five More Better Boys and Another Cuke ~

~ Better Boys Number 7-9-10-11-12-13 ~ I Gave number 8 to Neighbor B.J. ~
Had one Better Boy tomato left.. Picked 5 more Sunday... Hoping for more... Lots more
And A nice cucumber after I thought they gave up, a couple more tiny ones setting on
A slow start for Sunday, some Kitchen chat with a couple Newbies... Did my BLOG
Did my clean-up routine, picked those tomatoes and then a jaunt to the Chopper for a Bingo and Crossword... No go on those
Not winning much on Bingos lately, more on Crosswords
Back to the Ranch for a breakfast of cantaloupe.. Now What? ...Bored again
So, I was stil ahead at the Casino, let's go again... Well we don't need to talk about this trip
But I think I still broke even there this month
Stopped in at the Riverside RED-X for another Bingo and Crossword
Back home to work a $9 winner Bingo... $3 profit on this last deal anyway
Then I set out another Smoked chicken quarter for later and mixed an early Manhattan and took a pic of the tomatoes and cuke

~ Them There Chicken Leg Quarters ~
~ Yummy as Usual! ~

~ All Sauced up and Ready to Chow Down ~
Well I didn't make it to the Parade, Carnival or Riverfest and Lemmy said I didn't have to go
We must have had a pretty good wind blowing her way as she said she could smell that chicken smoking
That's another good thing about smoking meat, that apple wood smoke aroma all day...
And the Festival continues today if I want to go take a look, maybe get a couple new pics
So I took the chicken out of the smoker about 1:30 p.m. and slathered it with KC Masterpiece sauce
Then just covered it and let it rest until I took a hankering to chow down on some
Later then, just some chicken, fresh made cole slaw and a hunk of Italian bread garlic toast... And a glass of Vino Tinto
Yum-yum and then some... Just a nice easy going... not much going on day... all day
~ Now... All Day Sunday to Find New Adventure ~

~ Smokin Chicken Leg Quarters ~
~ On Sale at the Price Chopper! ~

~ Check This Out ~ 58 Cents a Pound ~ All this for $3.46 Including Tax! ~
Riverfest Day and what shall we BBQ? Well I was thinking Beef Brisket again... It's been awhile
So up to the Price Chopper to check things out... Oops! Brisket at $3.99 a pound, one in the case for $30.00... No thanks
Well, Pork Spareribs not too bad at $2.19 a pound, but I still have some in the freezer
But.. Lookee there!, chicken leg quarters for 58 cents a pound, can't pass that up, $3.46 instead of $30.00... Yaah
So I trimmed them up... Dusted with BBQ Rub and then went out to light the fire, stuck in a chunk of apple wood
Just then I heard the Parade going down Main Street, still time to get Downtown before they did but I'll pass on this one
Now the chicken is smokin away, and will be done about 1:30 p.m.

~ Short Clip from Last Year's Parade ~
Now 1 p.m. and the chicken should be about ready to take out of the smoker and sauce up with KC Masterpiece
I just checked on Facebook and Lemmy, in Oklahoma says I don't have to go to the Parade if it's too hot
Well, now it is 86F and going to 91F, maybe I will just stay here and sip a Manhattan
I have this last year's entire parade on a Blu-ray DVD and I can watch the whole thing on HD on my big TV if I want to stay outta the heat
And I have the Carnival and Riverfest video on DVD also.. Who need a re-run in the heat?
~ Now.. Going out to bring in the Smoked Chicken Leg Quarters ~

~ Parkville Days Riverfest 2010 ~
~ Parade ~ Carnival ~ Riverfest ~
~ Fox 4 News Festival Pre-View with Mike Thompson ~
Well now, has it been a year already? Time does fly... when you're havin' fun!
So today Parkville Days Riverfest, I think the Best Fest of the year, Parade, Carnival, and Riverfest
They have a 4th of July Riverfest too, but no bands in the parade so this one is better with the High School Bands
And all the usual vendors in Riverfront Park but more animals and activities
(Wanna Hear the Band?)
So, I have photoed and videoed the Parade, Carnival and Fest several times, have several Web pages, should I go again?
I don't think I will go down and wait for the Parade this year, may go down later to see what's new at the Fest
Usually pretty much the same but last year they had a Wild West Shoot-Out and Camel Rides
And it will be 92 degrees and humid after the big rain storm last night, maybe I'll go and maybe I won't
Pretty quiet day yesterday, watered all the potted plants and then later we had a heavy rain to do it all again
The day before I picked a couple more Better Boys tomatoes, gave the best one to neighbor BJ
And I thought the cucumbers were about done but I saw another one starting and another with some size but still tiny
Talked to Mike, upstairs, says he's moving to Texas, his girl friend moved there for a better job
So then I gave him a real nice ripe Better Boy tomato and a half slab of ribs...
And then he gave me a crisp 100 Dollar bill, last payment for the Sound System I sold him
Hate to see him go, best neighbor ever in this building

~ KANSAS CITY BARBECUE ~
~ On the Travel Channel ~
~ Adam Richmond in Kansas City Sampling Our BBQ ~
A few days ago I saw that Adam Richmond on the Travel Channel was taking his program to Kansas City
I don't much care for his food gorging contests but he does show some interesting places
So I set my U-Verse DVR recorder in the living room to record that session
Then I played back that recording on my computer and recorded it again to a file on my Hard Drive
Then I used that file in my Vegas Studio 10 Video editor to make a video to upload to Vimeo
So then I spent a long time rendering that video to make a DVD and to upload to Vimeo
So then I tried to upload it... Whoops... It was 3.3 GB and I can only upload 2 GB at a time to Vimeo
Well it was a HD file so I rendered it to .mpg in SD and then uploaded it to Vimeo
So I guess that Sigi saw it, he was buggin me to get it on, but the video was choppy in .mpg
So... Yesterday I edited the program again and split it in about half
Deleting the segment where he tried to stuff himself with an oversized BBQ Sandwich
The best part was the first Kansas City BBQ and then a Famous Fried Chicken place here
Then I rendered that to AVCHD High Def and it is less than 2 GB and I uploaded it to Vimeo this morning
And it looks pretty good and kinda interesting if you don't know about Kansas City and our BBQ
Like Adam says we... do ALL styles of BBQ in Kansas City and I have done most of them myself
And I had some of MY BBQ last night for dinner and gave a half a slab of Smoked ribs to Mike, Upstairs

~ Baked Sugar Cookies ~
~ And That was About All ~

~ No Not Bread Slices ~ Uncle Don's Sugar Cookies! ~
And another quiet day, threatening rain but just a few sprinkles
Only got out once for the Mail and a Bingo and Crossword
And nothing good in the mail and the Scratchers were duds
Now I need to go get some Vermouth and TP (vital necessities)
So pretty routine all day after a SUPER Cheese and Tomato and Mayo sandwich on toast for breakfast
Those Better Boys tomatoes just taste SO GOOD!
Then my afternoon libation and CNN News and then started a diced smoked pork sandwich for dinner
Just dice up a slice of the Smoked Pork shoulder, add KC Masterpiece sauce, nuke a minute and serve on a big bun with fresh chopped onion!
Made some cole slaw to go along with that, but what's for desert?
So it's been awhile, bake some cookies? No rasins so I opted for Sugar Cookies, just flour, butter and sugar, a little vanilla
Well I didn't make little balls of dough, I made BIG ones... And when they baked, they ran together
But they taste good and I can eat TWO instead of 4 little ones
Bye the bye... If your cookies are too crisp, you can soften them up with 30 seconds in the M/W...
But you knew that... didn't you?
~ Now... Off to the Price Chopper ~

~ Picked Some More Basil ~
~ Third Time this Year ~ One More Harvest Left

~ Picked... Next to Rinse and Dry ~
Well, not much going on yesterday, picked that tallest stem of basil to dry and store
They say to not let it flower, changes the taste somehow
Need to use up those tomatoes now, one dinky Rutgers and two nice Better Boys, maybe one for breakfast
One more cucumber coming along, I clipped that dead one that was climbing the tree
Another crop of jalapenos on the way, another half pint to pickle
And a few more small poblanos on the plant, a few Rutgers tomatoes but that will be it for them
I watered all the pots nicely again yesterday... And pulled the Sunflower, it gave up and died
I had a couple smoked ribs in the fridge that needed to get used... So I started on some BBQ beans
I chopped onions and those two litle poblano peppers, Sauteed them in olive oil, added the chopped meat from the ribs
Added that to a large can of Bush's Best Baked Beans with BBQ sauce and spices, simmered slowly
And later a bowl of those with a hot dog and bun were very tasty... Yeah!
So, with my afternoon cocktail and TV... Later Beans and Hot Dog, that was about it for a quiet day
