~ Pineapple on Sale ~

~ And it is Delish! ~

~ Bottom Part to Eat ~ Top Part to Plant ~

So... The rains left and the sun came out... Some anyway... And hopefully warmer today...
The plants outside are not happy with all this rain...

And the bedroom carpet is dry this morning... And no more water came in with the last rain
Someone was saying we got 4 inches overnight... Maybe the Pipe is Fixed

So... Dropped by the Price Chopper to buy a scratcher lotto ticket...
Saw one of the Mexican guys at the service counter with a nice pineapple
I says "Que tienes en su mano?" He grins and says "Muy barato! $1.99"
AHA! So I headed for the produce section to get me one... Lowest price in a long time

Now that is all peeled and sliced and in the fridge, tried a sample... Delish!
And the top, what they call the corm, sitting in water til I can get it planted in a pot

And what else? Another tech toy... Canon Speedlite... Due to be delivered today...

And... Away We Go! ~

~ Carpet Almost Dry ~ Fans Still Underneath ~

Well... an uneasy night... Woke at least 4 times to a new T-Storm and heavy rain...
Did not hear the rushing water like I did the night before however...
And this morning... No new water came in and the carpet drying nicely

Boss Bob and Tom the maintenance man were in and out several times.
Shifting the fans and checking on things

Boss Bob went to the lumber yard to buy covers for the window wells in back
He had Tom dig a diverting ditch and place the sod and dirt against the building
They took the downspout elbow apart to check for clogs in the downspout and drain pipe
Found no clogs, didn't think the elbow was leaking...
It may have just been the excess quantity of rain in that downpour that the gutters could not handle

Next step... Get the carpet man here to finish up and hope for some dry weather

Now... Another Day to Use Up ~

~ Boss Bob and Tom ~ Boss Bob Vacuuming the Water ~

~ Fans Drying up the Water ~ Now Under the Carpet to Dry it ~

Well... NOW WHAT? This happened early this morning...
And I didn't say a word about it in my BLOG...
Just rattling off about yesterdays winnings and cooking
Anyway, I woke up early to a Thunder-Storm and pouring rain...
Then I heard rushing water like I had never heard it before...
Like water rushing through a pipe... But what pipe?
So the rain slacked off and the noise went away... Then I stepped out of bed and the carpet was wet!
OH OH Have to Call Boss Bob as Soon as he gets here
NO NO Sigi... Wet from the RAIN...

So on to coffee time and Some Chat in the Kitchen Room and I wrote my BLOG

Went up to the Chopper to trade in my winner $10 and got a couple more... (duds)
Then back to see Boss Bob was not here but I found Tom and told him about my disaster
Said Boss Bob was at Home Depot and would be down when he got back...

Then I went out to check the downspout... AHA... That's it... but how and why? A hole in the dirt right behind the pipe
Looks like it might have a leak at the pipe bend...

So Boss Bob showed up, showed him the bedroom and then the pipe... He wasn't convinced
Then in with a couple large fans and the Shop Vac... Pulled the carpet back...
Cut out the Carpet pad that was wet...Vacuumed up water on the floor...
Then put the carpet back over the fans to dry it out

Now the plan is when the carpet is dry, have the carpet man lay new padding...
Put the carpet back down and shampoo it and hope for dry weather

AND... before that... Take the pipe apart to see if it is clogged or a leak at the elbow
And hope to fix it before the rains start again... As MORE heavy rain predicted for today!

Yeah ~ Always Something... HUH? ~

~ Grilled Chicken Leg Quarters ~ Grilled Burgers ~

Doggone it.. Did it again... Erased this mornings BLOG whan I added the addendum... So I will put a condensed version back...
As usual.. coffee time Kitchen Chat... Then to the Coopper for some scratchers...

Next to the Casino to win $30.. Then to the Riverside RED-X to get another Winner $10 Crossword...
Next to the Price Chopper for some on-sale chicken and ground beef
Back home to trim the chicken, make the burgers, start the charcoal fire...
Pour a glass of vino and sit in the nice weather watching the chicken and burgers grill
While the Chicken finishes in the oven and the burgers cool... make some potato salad

Package and store the chicken and extra burgers in the freezer...
Later a burger with all the works and some tater salad... Off to bed after a busy... lucky... day

Now off to do in another New Day ~

~ A New Day ~ A New Week ~

~ And What Happens Today? ~

~ Trashy Neighbor at Parkville Apartments ~

Well, what you gonna do if Boss Bob won't do it... He warned this guy and ordered the trash off the porch... But it is still there
Boss Bob tries to keep this place in decent chape but some people don't help
A bad result from a supposedly good deed... The lady that lives here is staying with her terminally ill mother
And as her son was laid off and lost his place... She is letting he and his wife stay here
Supposed to be a 'few months' but has been way more than a few so far
And the trash load is increasing every day... Not a decent view when I walk out my door

Picked up the Snail Mail and headed to the Pricve Chopper to trade my $1 Lotto winner for a possible loser for Wednesday
And picked up a Bingo and Crossword... Won $10 on the Crossword
Back to trade that for $4 and a 'Price is Right' and another Bingo... Both Duds

So now what... It's only money... so I headed to the Casino
Played up and down and mostly down... Almost out and got a hit and back up...

Then down and out... Let's go home... Fun time is Over

Then what... Glass of vino tinto and TV, Roast beef and veggies... Off to bed...

Now off to do in another Week.. When is Pay Day anyway? ~

~ Checking the Better Boys Tomatoes ~

~ And Looking Good ~

~ Now When do We get a Tomato? ~

Nice Sunny Saturday Morning... A little on the cooler side, starting out at 42... Climbing into the 60s later...
Just a very few in Kitchen Chat, Sigi was there, Chefraw for a few minutes and Bruce in Australia for quite awhile

Headed up to the Chopper to get a lotto and a couple scratchers.. no luck on the scratchers and did Win the Lotto last night...
All of three numbers.. Hah... free ticket! Have to go trade that one in...

~ Salsa Ingredients ~ Salsa Fresca Prepared ~

And I picked that little FIRST jalapeno pepper...
Heard if you keep them picked, makes new ones grow faster, couple new blooms on there now
Had to head back to the Chopper for some garlic, couple Vidalia onions, a few other things
Then diced up a tomato, a clove of garlic, some onion, and that little Jalapeno to make salsa
Then I diced up some roast beef, warmed up a flour tortilla, stuffed with beef and salsa...
Pretty Good Beef Burrito with Pico de Gallo... (salsa fresca)

Then a glass of wine... Then some Choco Chip ice cream.. and off to beddy bye...

~ Now a Long Sunday to Find Something to Do ~

~ My First Jalapeno Pepper ~

~ Almost Ready to Pick ~

~ Yeah... Right There! ~

So, checking on my plants... The Rutgers tomato looks great
Didn't go up the stairs to check the Better Boys tomatoes at the side
The Poblano pepper seems to be waiting for some warmer weather
A couple of the cucumbers look like they might recover, Some new seeds in there for back-up
And... the Jalapeno almost looks ready to pick, wonder what I can do with that, some salsa maybe...

And what was the rest of Friday... Not much... A little cooler, some hazy sun...
So I took that Fiver that Boss Bob gave me and got a loser Bingo and Crossword...
About the same luck as I had with that $20 he gave me for planting the bushes

No cooking projects, I have so much in the freezer and fridge now to catch up on
I did make a huge green salad first, then an ear of sweet corn...
Then finished off with a nice hunk of that Mexican Style pork shoulder and a big baked potato... Yummm...

Worked on an announcement BJ (neighbor) wants me to make for his son... Have a sample for him

Then to Catch-up on TV and later dinner... Ho Hum... Nuthin to write home about...

~ Today's Project ~ After 5 Minutes of Raking ~

This was next door to me but I got tired of looking at it...
The maintenance man was here yesterday trimming the older bushes a little...
I had already trimmed the old ones in front of my place...
I mentioned that ugly black strip sticking up and said that's an easy fix... He said yeah, and gave it a kick...

That underlayment is laid in strips and when people walk across it
they sometimes kick the rocks up some and then it turns up...
All you have to do is rake the rocks back and out from under that strip...
Then rake the pebbles back on top... I keep my side nice and covered... And do NOT walk in the pebbles much...
So I just got out the rake that Boss Bob lends me and did that job in all of 5 minutes.. and looks nice now.. HUH?

And, by the by, when I went by to pick up my snail mail, Boss Bob stopped and handed me a $5 bill,
get a scratcher he says... HAH! So he paid me for a job he doesn't know yet that I did...
I am not modest about my success, I'll show him a pic...
and brag a little...

~ A Little More of Each Today! ~

~ Another Argosy Visit ~

So, what to do on Thursday? I didn't win the Lotto for Wednesday so I am still living in poverty...
I went to check the snail mail.. and had $3 in my pocket so I dropped by the Chopper for a scratcher,
I got a new one called The Price is Right, interesting but doesn't take long to work...
That is what I like about the Bingo and Crossword, takes longer to lose your money
So then I took my winner back to trade on a Bingo and Crossword and no go on those...
And that was still a $1.00 win for the day

Now what... Everything caught up here and BORED again... Where is that Casino?
I am ahead for the month... Took a couple twenties out of my stash and headed over

Some old lady sitting at MY favorite mnachine... The whole next row out of service.. doing some updating

So I chose the end one in the next row... And started winning a lot of little ones

Hit a fair roll and was $25 ahead... My rule is $20 ahead and cash out... But I wasn't there very long
So I kept on, hit a couple more fair ones and then another Three 7s... Now $32 ahead...

NOW.. time to cash out and I headed over to the Riverside RED-X
and picked up another Bingo, Crossword and a gallon of Vino Tinto
And back to the Ranch...

~ Then a Little More Cooking ~

Now what? Well that roast beef in the fridge... I headed back to the Price Chopper for some beef mushroom gravy,
frozen egg noodles and Choco Chip Ice cream (on sale of course)
Back to chop up some onions and celery... saute that in a pot with a bit of olive oil...
Dice up a good sized hunk of beef, add that to the pot
And then stir in a can of beef gravy... Add the noodles... Voila!...
Later, a plate of that and some mixed vegetables and and then toddle off to bed...

~ April 25 ~ ~ ~ ~ May 05 ~

Now what? I think too much rain and not quite enough sun...
My cucmbers don't look so good... Well a couple still do...
I checked online.. could be a couple of things but I do think too much water...
Need the leaves to dry out some... Just have to see what happens...
I did plant a few more seeds to catch up in case these don't make it...

~ Then a Little Cooking ~

~ Carne Asada de Carne de Vaca ~ (Beef Chuck Roast) ~

So later yesterday I attacked that chuck roast... Do it my oven pot roast method...
Dredge in flour, then brown good in peanut oil... Slice a big onion into my biggest Pyrex dish...
Place the browned beef on top, sprinkle with a little garlic parsley salt
and then cover with foil and into a 300F oven...

After an hour or so I uncover and flip over the other side and back in for another hour...
Back an hour later to check, flip again and back in for another hour...

Then remove the beef, plate and set aside...
Then into the beef and onion juice with some celery, carrots and potatoes,
cover and back in the oven for an hour or more...

Then slice up some beef, maybe a little mustard and horseradish,
plate some of the vegetables... and a feast is ready!

Oh How Sweet it Is!

~ On Sale Day! ~

~ Did I Tell Anyone that I Love My Price Chopper? ~

Well I sure do... And especially when they have something on sale that I want... Which is most of the time...
So while I was in Kitchen Chat this morming I got their email weekly sales ad...
Lookee there... Boneless chuck beef roast for $1.99 a pound... Usually $3.29 a pound.. Have to have some of that...
So I got a nice 3 pounder listed for $10.36... Sale price $6.26... But an extra $2 off sticker and paid $4.26 for that!
And sweet corn at 25 cents an ear... got me 6 ears of that... and some other things,
cabbage, cauliflower, celery, carrots, onion, bananas... cookies...
And some all purpose cleaner to clean the Kitchen in case Sigi is looking...

And what do you think I paid for all that? Total bill including sales tax was $21.61...
Except for the Vino Tinto (red wine) which I got at Gomers for $10.98

~ Now See Why I Love My Price Chopper? ~

~ Planted the Last Bush Yesterday ~

Now that hole was some dig! A few inches of heavy clay on top, then maybe 3 inches of hard packed gravel and then back into heavy clay...
Hard contitions for any plant... But we shall see...
I would dig 5 minutes then rest for 10... And drank the last beer that Can left here...
Finally got it deep enough... put in some potting soil, then the bush and then filled the rest with potting soil,
added about a gallon of water with some Miracle-gro in it...
Pulled the underlayment back, then spread the pebbles back.. Finished with that project...

~ An Old Project Revisited ~

~ Be Patient Sigi ~ I Know You've Seen these Before ~

Several years ago Boss Bob (owner/manager) hired a landscaper to plant trees and bushes and pebble fill to the yards here...
But at the top of the stairs above my place... He neglected to build a retaining wall...
and the pebbles on the slope washed down the stairs and ended up in my parking lot

After a couple years of sweeping up the pebbles in my parking lot and washing dirt from under the stairs...
I told Boss Bob that I could fix that for him...

So he said go ahead and I'll pay you for the materials
So I bought some blocks to match the others on the lower wall and some edging and mulch
and set about constructing the wall, setting the edging and rearranging the remaining pebbles

Finally buying a couple bushes to top off the project and VOILA! Problem solved and Oh so pretty too...

And, oh yes... I gave Bob a bill for $119 worth of materials... And he paid me for that... And then gave me a $50 gift card for the Price Chopper...

~ Pull the Underlayment Back ~ Rake Back the Pebbles~ VOILA! ~

Well now... A Busy Monday... A nice chat with the gang in the Kitchen Room... With Sigi in IM on the side...
Then get started on the day... Decided to run up to the bike shop for some chain lube...
Back at the ranch to oil the chain and whatever else looked like it needed it...
Then loaded the bike on the Blazer and headed for the park...

Just a gorgeous sunny day for a ride by the river... Just at 70 degrees with a slight breeze...
But the gears wouldn't shift... A good thing it was stuck in mid-range and third gear...
But just right for an easy cruise... Have to check what I didn't get oiled up...
So a three mile ride and back to the ranch and now what?
Well, let's go get those bushes that Boss Bob said he would buy...
One in front of my place died last year... Need something to fill that gap...

Headed up to the Grass Pad where Bob says he gets a discount...
Right up front were the ones I wanted... Knock-Out Rose Shrub... They have them all over town...
They bloom all year... Really look nice...
Got two of them and a nice golden barberry to even out the gap in front of my place...
One rose for the other side of the walk to balance the one in front of my place...

Now the hard part... The original sod was overlaid with a landscaping cover then that covered with pebbles...
That had to be pulled back to expose the soil underneath...
Next dig out the stump of the bush that died out... Then dig a hole for the rose... Planted that one...
I wanted the new bush nearer to the walk so that meant I needed a second bush to balance out with the other two on my side...
Then the second hole for the barberry... Got that planted...
Then rake the extra soil out even and the excess into my bucket to dump out back...

Then pull the underlayment back and rake the pebbles back evenly and finally DONE!
That was quite a workout for me... Even taking frequent breaks and finishing one of the beers that Can left here last July...
And it looks pretty good to me... Have pics to show Boss Bob when I go collect for the bushes... Now off to chat...

~ Leaf Smashed Cuke ~ Wind Damaged Oregano Twig ~

So we had some wind all day and all night a couple days back... It blew a lot of twigs and leaves off my pear tree and one landed right on top of a tender cuke sprout... Was thinking it might pep up, but still it's laying flat... Oh well, another sprout came up a couple days before that to fill in... They say 4 plants to a hill are about right though so there should be plenty in that pot... And I clipped off that oregano twig... Dried it in the oven... Crumbled up and added it to my little jar of oregano leaves.. Nothing goes to waste...

~ New Sage Plant ~

And then I went over to Larry's on Saturday to get another herb, thought I might try sage... Picked out a nice healthy looking plant to make a trio of herbs on the veranda... Here it is looking good... Even looking better today...

And... I took those ribs out of the fridge about 6 a.m. Sunday... Dusted good with Jonathan's Dry BBQ rub and let them warm up to room temp... Then I lit the fire about 7:45 a.m. and got the ribs in the smoker just at 8 a.m. I was in Kitchen Chat and watched out the window for the smoke... When it would quit, I would go out and add a couple chunks of apple wood to keep the smoke going... Then later just at 1 p.m. I took the ribs out of the smoker... Slathered good with El Pato Kansas City Style BBQ sauce and into a 250F oven for a couple hours... Then took them out... unwrapped and let them cool, later slicing them nicely and packaged and stored MOST of them in the freezer... Selecting a few choice morsels for dinner...

Then, a couple chunks os buttererd Italian bread... a dish of that good Tater Salad and some of those bee yoo tee full ribs!... Man it don't get much better than this!

Well I was talking to Jake in Newfoundland on Kitchen Chat and showing some pics of the landscaping I did for Boss Bob several years ago... I am going to make a BLOG of that soon as some new people haven't seen that worthwhile project... In the meantime, I wanted to show Jake where the Better Boys tomato bed is in relation to the rest of my pots in my 'Garden'...

So here's that... And I just took the ribs out of the smoker, on with the BBQ sauce and now in the oven for anoher 45 minutes and then VOILA! And tomorrow... some more garden plants and then sneak in some pictures of those ribs somewhere... I got a Mexican and BBQ surplus at the moment...

~ Hombro de Cerdo de Carne Asada con los Tomates, las Cebollas y los Chiles ~

~ (Roast Pork Shoulder with Tomatoes, Onions and Hot Peppers) ~

So, after a busy morning I did the ~hombro de Carne de Cerdo~ And it turned out great... Last week or so I smoked up several pounds of sliced pork shoulder, this time I did my 'Tejada de Carne de Cerdo' recipe... It is the same recipe except Tejada is pork steak and this time it's Hombro ~ sliced pork shoulder... Just cut thicker... A long time ago a friend at work gave me a can of jalapeno peppers from Mexico... Now what do you do with those? Never used them before... So after a bit of thought... I invented Tejada de Carne de Cerdo... Pork steak with spicy salsa... Not really a fixed recipe, just roast the pork in the oven, drain the fat, then add onions, garlic, tomatoes or tomato sauce, some cumin, oregano, chili powder, basil... and roast another hour or so...

Then you can lift out the meat and add a cup or so of rice... Let that simmer a bit and absorb the salsa and Presto! Arroz Mexicano... Or just pour the sauce over the meat and maybe some potatoes... Just scrumptious... I just baked a huge potato yesterday... Stuffed that with butter, had a hunk of pork with plenty of salsa on top... And a slice of garlic toast... Now that was something to write home about...

Now all the bills are paid, everything bought that I was getting short on... How Sweet it is Again!...

~ Pork Spareribs on Sale at the Chopper! ~

~ Can You See That Price? ~ WOW! ~ Ten Pounds for $9.98 ~

Well now... After a banana and a couple raisin oatmeal cookies I headed over to Riverside to Larry's Nursery and bought a nice looking Sage transplant... I got that potted... Took a few pics of this and that and then headed up to the Price Chopper for a sweet potato and a Lotto ticket... I got that and then in check-out line I saw this guy with a two double packs of spareibs... I says I'll smoke those for you if you give me one... He said that's as good a deal as the price on these... Dollar a pound! WHAT? Lowest price I have seen lately was $1.19 a pound and when was that? So I headed back to the meat counter and picked out a couple slabs... 99 cents a pound! Still frozen so I have them thawing out now for smoking tomorrow...

And... I just did about 3 pounds of pork shoulder last night.. I have most all that in the fridge... Besides I planned a slice of ham tonight with that sweet potato... And I am going to make potato salad as soon as I get this uploaded... See ya Tomorrow...

~ Not Quite the One I want... This is the HPE 170t I Want the 180t ~

So... I thought I had my want list all cleared out... What else do I want that I don't need? BUT... Here comes the April Issue of PC World magazine with an article about Super Computers... and most with a Super Price! But... Here, they say, is a Super Computer with a price the rest of us can live with... The HP Pavilion Elite HPE 170t... Now that looks like the one I want... Until I looked online... There I found the HPE 180t was a bit more like what I want... Starting around $1009.00... then adding the specs and other features I want... Just at $1,600... Yeah.. I want that one! Only problem... where's the money?... Well I'll work on that... as for now. it's back at the top of my want list...

So what else? Well Friday and April 30... And the mailman came early and LOOKEE there... My IBM check... HAH... So I headed for the bank and deposited that.. Then into the Price Chopper for a few purchases... Including a few pounds of the sliced pork shoulder on sale... then back to the ranch to pay all my bills and then what? Well, let's go to the Casino, haven't been since forever... So a fairly good time... Never got more than $5 ahead but played nearly an hour on my investment... And I hope that loss will suit me for this month and I can stay away from there... Wanna bet?

And then for the afternoon project, I set about preparing that sliced pork shoulder into a Mexican delight... Smoked the last I bought a couple weeks ago... do it a little different this time... But.. that will be on my BLOG for tomorrow... See ya then...
