After joining the Air Force in Kansas City on October 17, 1950 I left the Union Station on the MKT railroad for San Antonio
and Basic Training at Lackland AFB...|
Because of a rush of enlistments in the Korean War the base was overcrowded and temporary housing was being built..
|After some days waiting around the barracks with nothing to do, a large group of us were sent to Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas to complete Basic Training there...|
After completing Basic Training I was assigned to Camera Repair Tech school and sent to Lowry AFB in Denver Colorado in January of 1951|
Here is the Photography and Camera Repair Technical school building...
Before school started I was assigned to temporary guard duty at night... Cold work but good duty as we got to sleep in all next day...|
Here is one of the large mess halls at Lowry
|Here the Base Exchange and Base Chapel|
|Every base has a theater and we had first run movies and 25 cents admission|
The old open bay wooden barracks that were still in use at most bases in those days|
Actually more comfortable than they looked...
|A little jammin session there?|
|Some of my fellow students in camera repair school|
|Reading over some technical manuals after school?|
|On the left, Dave Bennett, went to Tech School with him there, skipped a year or so and joined him again at Luke AFB in January of 1952|
|And big pastime all the while, writing home...|
|We did get a Christmas leave from school in December in 1950, here at home with a couple high school buddies...|
|And I brought my big old Speed Graphic press camera back with me... there's the case on my bunk, propping up Dave...|
I was receiving the Sears Newspaper, I worked there before and after I joined the Air Force...|
And I bet the guys I could get in the paper, took this photo and sent it to Sears and lookee there!, I was on the front page of the next issue with it!...
|And, while I was at Tech school, and after Basic, we were all promoted to PFC... This one of the few pictures I have with only one stripe...|
|And Dave, with his first stripe outside our old barracks 444...|
|A walk in Downtown Denver...|
And then, graduating second in class in March 1951, getting promoted to Corporal... And being reassigned to Scott AFB... |
See you in Belleville Illinois next...
